FAITH GARDEN: Model for Backyard Gardeners

LUCENA CITY, June 29 – One doesn’t need a big tract of land to insure a sufficient harvest and supply of fruits and vegetables for his family.  And sell the surplus to the market. Even in commercial centers and other highly urbanized areas, where lots are high priced and open areas are very rare, one can raise vegetables and fruits for his kitchen. A 120-meter lot beside the Governor’s Mansion and Kalilayan Cultural Center in the heart of Lucena City doesn’t attract tourists and visitors like the sprawling Perez Park at the Provincial Capitol compound. But this small lot boasts a model vegetable garden set up by Quezon Gov. Wilfrido L. Enverga, under the couple’s Food Always In The Home (FAITH) program.

Gov. Enverga put up the model garden last year as vital component of his food security program designed to insure a sufficient supply of vegetables and fruits in every Quezonian’s home. A visit to the FAITH model garden is a must for all backyard gardeners and agriculturists who will certainly draw lessons and experiences from this 120-meter model garden. The garden is planted to beans, bananas, ampalaya, pechay, cabbage, cassava, eggplant, corn, cauliflower, carrots, papaya—and even herbal plant like oregano and artamisa. The garden has compost boxes and faucets that water the plants.  A unique feature of the FAITH garden are the hauling bamboo trunks and old PVC pipes planted to beans, pechay, kangkong and other vegetables. The model garden is managed by a small staff headed by Linda Alina, a supervising agriculturist who was sent by Gov. Emverga to Sta. Cruz, Laguna to observed modern backyard gardening./ Benny Luzentales

TYPHOONS NOW SPORT PINOY NAMES

Benny Luzentales

For the past several years, the series of typhoons and tropical storms that hit the Philippines were named after ladies. Thus, we had typhoons Asiang, Bebeng, Kading, Dading, Didang, Gloring, Huaning, Isiang, Mameng, Omeng, Pitang, Rosing, Titang, Welming, Yeyeng, etc. Experts from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) explain that typhoons that originate from above the equator are given female names. Bohol Congressman Ernesto Herrera four years ago, while a member of the Senate, questioned the use of female names among typhoons, saying it was unfair and derogatory to the opposite and weaker (really?) sex. FULL STORY

Quezon lawmaker behind June 12:

Observance of independence day

Benny Luzentales and Ma. Christina R. Villanueva

For many years after July 4, 1946, the Philippines observed its Independence Day on the  fourth of July.  The local observance was patterned after the American celebration of Independence Day.  After all, it was the United States government which granted our independence on July 4. It took several years before Filipino historian and researchers discovered that the real independence of the Philippines took place on June 12, 1898 when then President Emilio Aguinaldo established the first Philippine Republic. Unknown to many Filipinos, particularly the younger generation, is the fact that the legislator who changed the date of Philippine independence from July 4 to June 12 came from Quezon Province.    He was Rep. Manuel S. Enverga (1st District), a staunch nationalist and statesman of the highest order. FULL STORY
